People who wish to analyze nature without using mathematics must settle for a reduced understanding.
- Richard P. Feynman
I am a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California San Diego, where I hold the J. Robert Beyster Endowed Chair in Engineering. I am also the Founding Director of the Center for Engineered Natural Intelligence and the Associate Director of the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind.
I hold several additional academic affiliations at UCSD, including the Neurosciences Graduate Program, the Computational Neurobiology Program, and the Institute for Neural Computation. I previously served as Vice Chair of the Department of Bioengineering and was Co-Director of the Retinal Engineering Center in the Institute of Engineering in Medicine.
I received an Hon.B.Sc. in human physiology and a B.Sc. in biophysics from the University of Toronto, Canada, followed by an M.Sc. in neuroscience also from the University of Toronto. I then did a Ph.D. in bioengineering and neurophysiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Institute for BioNanotechnology and Medicine (IBNAM) and the Department of Neurology at Northwestern University. I joined the faculty at UCSD in 2003.
I am also an active duty member of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR). I am an EMT and hold a Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) certification in the Medical Unit and Advanced Mission Team (AMT) within Search and Rescue. We are primarily responsible within San Diego County and assist neighboring counties when requested as part of mutual-aid calls. At times, we work closely with ASTREA, the Sheriff’s helicopter unit (both SAR and ASTREA are part of the Emergency Services Division within the department), as well as CalFire.
