Calcium waves in astrocyte networks: theory and experiments

A commentary about our Frontiers in Neuroengineering paper by MacDonald, Yu, Buibas and Silva was featured in Frontiers in Neuroscience, the first tier parent journal in the Frontiers in Neuroscience series. The commentary was written by Dr. Michele Giugliano, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Neuroengineering.
The paper describes a phenomenological model of intercellular signaling in astrocyte networks, and suggests that a partially regenerative mechanism associated with the release and diffusion of ATP by the cells mediates the mechanism by which they communicate in a network.
