How many antibodies work after antibody conjugation?

A commentary about our Nano Letters paper by Pathak, Davidson, and Silva was featured in the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal Analytical Chemistry. The paper describes a molecular method for estimating the number of functionally bound antibodies chemically conjugated to quantum dot nanocrystals. Quantum dots are fluorescent nanoparticles that offer unique advantages for imaging cells and sub-cellular structures, but as our paper showed it is critical to make sure that the nanoparticles are correctly formulated. Otherwise non-specific effects can lead to misleading and reproducible false positive artifact labeling.
